Fitting & Replacement

What changing a handle involves, and when it isn’t possible.

Replacing an Old Handle

A handle already mounted on a Japanese knife must come off before another can be fitted, and it cannot be preserved: it is broken away with a hammer. The replacement is then seated and set in the same manner.

Handles Held On by Rivets

If the handle is fixed by rivets through its sides, the knife is western and its tang is a different shape from the wa tang these are made for. We rehandle Japanese knives only, and a riveted western knife cannot be converted to take one of these.

Changing a Handle Before You Buy

On a knife not yet purchased, we would rather not break off an unused handle to fit another; it is a waste of the maker’s work. Depending on the knife it may still be possible, so write to us about yours, with the understanding that we will usually advise against it.

No. Rivets through the sides mean a western handle, and a western tang is a different shape from the wa tang these are made for. We rehandle Japanese knives only, and there is no conversion that would let a riveted knife take one of these.

If it is a Japanese knife with a standard wa tang and no rivets, usually yes. Some makers cut theirs wider or deeper, so send a photo and we’ll confirm fit before you order.

Knife type narrows it to handles made for that knife. Measure your blade from heel to tip, not the tang, then match it to the size chart on the listing.

Longer handles use more material, so price can vary by size as well as knife type.
